Who doesn’t want a mane of shiny, luscious hair? But in the quest for that mane, sometimes, we end up overdoing things. Megha Pilwalkar, creative stylist at Looks Salons, explained that overdoing any hair treatment will not fix the hair, rather will damage it.
“Overindulging in hair is not advisable as it may have an adverse effect so proper timeline, and guidance have to be followed,” she said. Too many products, treatments, or styling can lead to product buildup, irritation in the scalp, and weakened hair.
Dr Manasi Shirolikar, dermatologist and founder of online consulting brand drmanasiskin.com agrees with Pilwalkar, saying that a good hair care routine should be practical and effective.
Let us first understand what are the essential steps before paring down your routine.
a. Cleansing: Regular and thorough cleansing is essential to remove dirt, excess oil, and product buildup. Choose a shampoo that matches your hair type and needs. Be cautious about overwashing, as it can strip natural oils and lead to dryness.
b. Conditioning: Conditioning is crucial to keep your hair hydrated and manageable. Apply a conditioner that suits your hair type, focusing on the ends. For those with specific concerns like frizz or damage – leave-in serums, leave-in conditioners or hair masks can be beneficial.
c. Protection: Protecting your hair from environmental stressors is often overlooked. UV rays, heat styling tools, and pollution can harm your hair. Consider using heat protectants, UV-protective sprays, and covering your hair in extreme sun exposure.

a. Assess Your Hair Needs: Tailor your routine to your hair type and concerns. If you have naturally oily hair, you might need less product, while those with dry or damaged hair may require more intensive care.
b. Limit Product Overload: Avoid using too many products at once, as it can lead to product buildup and weigh your hair down. It’s better to use fewer products that address your specific needs.
c. Streamline Steps: Some products combine functions. For example, a leave-in conditioner with UV protection hybrid can be a time-saving and effective solution.
Some people refrain from getting regular trims but Dr Shirolikar emphasised that a trim every few months can also help prevent split ends from travelling up the hair shaft.
