The world of fragrance can be mesmerising yet confusing for amateurs. With so many varieties out there, and different kinds of notes to pick from, choosing scents that suit you the best can be an exhausting and expensive affair.

Lucky for us, digital creator Deekshana Reddy shared an easy hack to help us in this endeavour. Taking to Instagram, she shared a video claiming that rubbing ones wrists together for 5 seconds and smelling that area of the skin can indicate what kind of perfume would suit you best. “If it smells like flowers, you have to use floral perfumes like rose, jasmine and lily. If it smells like eggs, you should use refreshing perfumes like citrus, woody, tea tree and aqua on your body,” she said.

Curious, we asked experts to shed some light on the accuracy of this phenomenon.

Mihir Jain, Sales and Marketing Director, Insight Cosmetics gave a green light to the hack saying, “this is a way of using body heat to amplify certain fragrance notes to give an insight into what might be suitable for a person’s natural chemistry. While not foolproof, this method can provide valuable guidance.”

For instance, if floral or spicy notes are detected, Jain suggested using fragrances with pear, orange blossom, pink pepper, and warm vanilla notes. If musky, sweet undertones emerge, then fragrances with a vibrant, musky profile may be ideal. For those who detect sweeter, comforting fragrances like vanilla, they would likely appeal to their tastes, with rich, gourmand notes. If tropical, creamy scents stand out, then fragrances with coconut and shea butter would be a perfect choice. While the pulse point trick might help people in guiding toward appropriate choices, personal preference and how a fragrance evolves on their skin remain the most important factors in choosing a signature scent.”

Ishita Saxena, certified aromatherapist and founder of Arezou said that how a fragrance will smell depends on several factors. When it comes to the body, your skin type, pH level, skin pigmentation and body odour play a major role. Your age and personality also matter in this regard. “If you are young and energetic, you might like fragrances belonging to the floral or fresh family. And if you want to show age, grace and power, you might like spicy and woody notes,” she said.

Emotions, season and occasions also determine your choice of fragrance at times. “You might want to opt for a floral and fresh fragrance in summer and a musky one during winter. A stronger fragrance for a party while a subtle one for work,” added Saxena.
