Navya Singh, a trans woman from Bihar, made history on September 22 by becoming one of the first trans women to ever compete in the Miss Universe India pageant. After being selected as a top 11 finalist in the Maharashtra leg of the competition, Singh took the national stage alongside two other trans women, marking a significant milestone for inclusivity in Indian beauty pageants.
Having faced numerous challenges, including gender dysphoria and sex reassignment surgery, Singh has emerged as a powerful voice for progress and inclusivity. She first gained recognition after her debut at Lakme Fashion Week in 2016 and has since walked for many top designers.

The model, reflecting on her journey, told Hindustan Times that Sushmita Sen’s Miss Universe victory in 1994 inspired her, “Sushmita Sen has always been my inspiration. I followed her journey closely. She was just 18 at the time and had her moments of fear. I’m feeling butterflies too, but I remind myself everyday that if she could overcome her challenges, I could too. If I let fear take over, main khudse haar maan rahi hoon, and I can’t let that happen.”
Calling it a dream come true in her official announcement on Instagram, Singh said, “From the heart of Bihar, Katihar, to the prestigious stage of Miss Universe India—this journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. After years of fighting for my true identity and overcoming countless challenges, I am incredibly proud to announce that I have been officially selected as one of the finalists for Miss Universe India 2024! 🌟”

She added that this achievement is not just hers but that “it’s a victory for equality, diversity, and the belief that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to shine.”
While Rhea Singha from Gujarat was crowned Miss Universe India 2024, Singh’s participation in the pageant has undoubtedly paved the way for more trans women to compete in beauty contests and challenge societal norms.
