Mahavir Jayanti 2023 Date in India:  Mahavir Jayanti is an important religious festival celebrated by Jains all over the world to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the twenty-fourth and the last Tirthankara of Jainism. The festival usually falls in late March or early April, on the thirteenth day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Chaitra.

This year, it will be celebrated on April 4, which is a Tuesday.

Lord Mahavir is believed to have been born in 599 BCE in Vaishali, Bihar, India, as the son of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. He was named Vardhaman and later, after attaining enlightenment, he became known as Mahavir or “the great hero.” Mahavir is known for his teachings of non-violence, compassion, and the importance of leading a simple and austere life.

The celebration of Mahavir Jayanti typically involves the chanting of prayers, recitation of religious scriptures, and elaborate processions. Jains visit temples and perform puja, offering flowers, sweets, and other offerings to Lord Mahavir’s idol. They also engage in charitable activities, such as donating food and clothing to the needy. Jains also organise processions called “Rath Yatras,” which involve the carrying of Lord Mahavir’s idol in a beautifully decorated chariot through the streets, accompanied by devotees singing hymns and chanting prayers. The Rath Yatra is an important part of the celebrations and is seen as a way to spread the message of peace, compassion, and non-violence to the world
