Karma Sutra: The imperfect present that drives human ambition

We imagine a picture-perfect world. But sadly, no matter how badly we crave for it, perfection exists only in mythology.

Our everyday existence seems rather banal and devoid of any purpose. Most of us feel trapped in a compromise to make things work, whether it’s in our relationships or at work. We imagine a tomorrow that will set us free from our encumbrances and where we shall have the luxury of choices.

In short, we imagine a picture-perfect world. But sadly, no matter how badly we crave for it, perfection exists only in mythology.

However, this craving for perfection manifests itself in creation and excellence. The imperfections in our life are a mere catalyst out of which emerges the magic — that sublime point where truth, beauty and goodness become one. But for it there would be no music, no song to sing, no canvas to paint, no poetry to write, no tale to tell… Like the song of the thorn birds, the pain becomes imperative to the process of creativity. And creativity is never imperfect because it is an expression of the divine flowing through us.

According to Jean-Paul Sartre,‘The works of God and the great achievements of man were shaped by one and the same impulse; the same rainbow shone in the spray of waterfalls, shimmered between the lines of Flaubert, gleamed in the Chiaroscuro of Rembrandt: it was the Spirit. The Spirit spoke to God about Men; to Men it bore witness to God’.

Struggle gives rise to the inner being and cultivates an inner world. This world is anything but banal and mundane. It is full of possibilities waiting to be unleashed. However, when this struggle is suppressed it leads to depression and anxiety and finds its outlet in violence and destruction. The choice of dealing with our imperfect present once again rests with us — to create or to destroy.
