Good Friday 2023 Quotes: The Friday before Easter is observed as Good Friday, the day on which Jesus Christ was crucified at Calvary, a site just outside of Jerusalem. A day of sorrow and penance, it is observed during the holy week as part of the ‘Paschal Triduum’. Good Friday is also known as ‘Holy Friday’, ‘Great Friday’, ‘Great and Holy Friday’, and ‘Black Friday’. This year, it falls on April 7. Notably, the date of Good Friday varies every year on both the modern-day Gregorian as well as the Julian calendars.

It is said that on this day, members of many Christian denominations like Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Methodist, Oriental Orthodox, and Reformed traditions attend church services and observe fasts. Catholic churches strip their altars bare and muffle their bells as a sign of mourning, according to Catholic.org. In many countries, it is regarded as a holiday.

The day remembers Jesus Christ who was arrested and made to walk with the cross through jeering crowds. He was then nailed to the cross by his wrists and feet and hung until he died. It is said that Jesus’ body was wrapped and taken by Joseph of Arimathea and placed in his own new tomb. According to Matthew 28:1, “After the Shabbat, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb”. “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said…” (Matt 28:6).
