Ambedkar Jayanti 2023: Date, Importance and Significance: Known as the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’, Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was a politician, economist, and jurist from India. Born on April 14, 1891, the influential Dalit leader led the committee that drafted India’s constitution during the Constituent Assembly deliberations. A strong supporter of women’s and labour rights, Ambedkar was also the first Law Minister in free India. As such, every year on April 14, the birth anniversary of the social rights advocate is commemorated.
Ambedkar was born into an impoverished Dalit Mahar family and dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of Dalits, who were deemed untouchables by society at the time. He donned many hats but was above all a social reformer. His birthday, thus, provides an opportunity for all Indians to reflect on the country’s socio-economic progress.
Fighting the atrocious and bitter caste system, he embarked on a number of undertakings and became the first Indian to receive a PhD in Economics from a foreign university. Ambedkar worked hard and studied at universities in the United States, Britain, and Germany and earned a Doctorate in Economics from Columbia University in 1917. He has written Annihilation of Caste – a seminal document talking about caste oppression in India. He often stressed on education as a potent tool that could help break the age-old restrictive shackles of discriminatory social practices.“Educate, agitate, and organise”, were his famous words.
Bhim Jayanti was first observed in 1928 by Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay, and it was declared a public holiday in more than 25 Indian states and union territories. The great statesman challenged India’s caste-based system that’s why his birthday is also observed as Equality Day throughout the country.
On Ambedkar Jayanti, all of the country’s important leaders, including the Prime Minister and President, pay homage to his statue in the Parliament. At various institutions, processions and competitions, plays, and theatrical adaptations based on the life of BR Ambedkar are held. Babasaheb’s contribution to uplifting the lives of Dalits and untouchables is commemorated on Bhim Jayanti, which is widely observed by Dalits, Adivasis, and labourers.
