Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali 2025 Date: All you need to know.Kartik Purnima & Dev Diwali 2025 Date, History and Importance: Kartik Purnima, also known as Tripuri Purnima and Tripurari Purnima, is a significant festival predominantly marked by the Hindu and Jain communities across India.
Mirroring the Diwali celebrations, it is celebrated as Dev Deepavali in North India, and on the day, devotees donate lamps, recite Vedic mantras, and sing bhajans, signifying the triumph of good over evil.
Meanwhile, in South India, the Karthigai Deepam festival is marked in Tamil Nadu, Trikarthika in Kerala, and Karthika Maasalu in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by the lighting of rows of lamps with 365 wicks in Lord Shiva temples on Karthika Puranam, which is the full moon day.
Together, these festivals signify purity, prosperity, and the illumination of the soul and celebrate the triumph of light over darkness.
This festival falls on the 15th lunar day of the Kartik month, and this year, Dev Diwali will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5, 202, with Pradoshkal Dev Diwali Muhurta starting from 05:15 PM up till 07:50 PM, according to drikpanchang.com.
The moonrise on the full moon day of Kartik Purnima is expected to be at 05:26 PM, with the full moon date starting from November 04, 2025, at 10:36 PM, and ending on November 05, 2025, at 06:48 PM.
The term “Tripurari”, which forms the basis of the name for this day, refers to a divine form of Lord Shiva who vanquished the powerful demon Tripurasura.
According to legend, Tripurasura, along with his brothers Vidyunmali, Tarakaksha, and Viryavana, had vanquished the gods and constructed three formidable cities in the sky, collectively called Tripura.
On Kartik Purnima, it is believed that Lord Shiva defeated these demons with a single arrow, leading to the illumination of the world—a reason this day is celebrated as a festival of lights, similar to Diwali but in honour of the deities.
