Linea nigra: When does the pregnant belly line appear and why?

Although the specific reason why melanin increases during pregnancy is unknown, the majority of medical professionals think that the placenta’s production of the hormone melanocyte-stimulating hormone is responsible for this phenomenon, stated Dr Shobha Gupta, medical director, gynecologist and infertility specialist from Mother’s Lap IVF Centre New Delhi and Vrindavan.

Notably, the pigment melanin is what gives your skin its colour. “Your skin darkens during pregnancy due to this rise in melanin. Melasma and darker areolas are caused by the same hormone. Nobody is really certain as to why some body parts are impacted while others are unaffected,” said Dr Gupta.

The linea nigra, which runs from your pubic bone to your belly button, is about 1/4 and 1/2 inches wide. “It can sometimes spread towards your breasts past the abdominal button. It can appear brown or light black and is darker than the colour of your skin,” mentioned Dr Gupta.

Is there a health condition that the linea nigra may indicate?

No, there are no pregnancy-related medical issues linked to the linea nigra. It’s a fully typical aspect of pregnancy, noted Dr Gupta.

Does it occur in all?

According to Dr Shalini, a linea nigra is present in up to 80 per cent of pregnant women, however, it may be more or less visible depending on your skin colour. “Those with darker complexions have a more prominent linea nigra than those with pale complexions. This is because darker-skinned people have more pigmentation than lighter-skinned ones,” said Dr Shalini.

How will it go away?

According to Dr Gupta, the good news is that after giving delivery, your linea nigra should lighten and your hormone levels should return to normal. “While you are pregnant, we do not advise using drugs, topical ointments, or other skin-lightening products. Since the sun’s ultraviolet rays can make your linea nigra darker, it can be helpful to wear sunscreen. The linea nigra’s severity may be lessened with the aid of folic acid. Foods like leafy green vegetables, beans, and whole wheat bread all contain folic acid,” said Dr Gupta.

After your baby is delivered, using a bleaching lotion can be an option, but only if you are not nursing. “If you are worried about how your linea nigra is looking, speak with your doctor,” urged Dr Gupta.
