The First Primary Trauma Course for the Haryana Traffic Police was organized by the Indian Head Injury Foundation in collaboration with Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals at the hospital premises.
This program was initiated after the discerning statement of the Honorable Road Transport Minister Kamal Nath published in the Times of India on 9th July,2010 where he emphasizes the need to sensitize policemen and medical personnel to the importance of the ‘golden hour’.
He further states,”The entire police force needs to be trained and instructed about handling accident victims with compassion and utmost urgency. Traffic police should not wait for investigators to arrive at the scene before shifting victims to the nearest hospital”.
The first lot of 24 Haryana Traffic Policemen out of a total of 340 was trained in Obstructed Airway Management,Rescue Breathing,Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation,Serious Bleeding and Bandaging,Spinal Injury Management,Triaging and safe transport of patients.
Addressing the workshop,Rajendra Prasad (Hon. Executive Director of Indian Head Injury Foundation) said,The ‘golden hour’ is the first hour after an injury,during which there is the highest likelihood of death or disability if prompt medical treatment is not given.
The minister’s letter comes months after the transport ministry set the target to bring down road fatalities by 50% by 2012. According to the latest report of the ministry’s transport research wing,nearly 1.2 lakh people died in road accidents in 2008.
