For decades, we have been associating cataracts with our grandparents and elders. Contrary to popular belief, cataract isn’t just an old age syndrome! With news about early onset of cataracts in youth emerging rapidly, it is imperative to understand what are the primary causes of this condition and how you can take care of your eyes to prevent any further risks.

Indianxpress.com spoke found out the do’s and don’ts when it comes to maintaining eye hygiene and taking care of the peepers effectively.

What generally causes cataracts?

“The lens in our eye is normally clear to help support vision. As age progresses and when we reach around 40, the proteins present in the lens start to break down. When this happens protein forms clumps. This gives the lens a cloud-like apparency, which may obstruct vision,” shared Dr Deepti Mehta, Consultant Ophthalmologist, CARE Hospitals Hitech City, Hyderabad.

According to her, aging is the most common cause associated with the development of cataracts.

“Reducing blue light, getting sufficient sunlight and loading up on antioxidants can help reduce the risk of developing cataracts. While reducing blue light helps decrease strain on eyes, getting sufficient sunlight helps with circadian rhythm and antioxidants reduce oxidative stress on the body,” she shared.

Precautions to keep in mind

  • Regularly consulting your eye doctor
  • Scheduling eye examinations in frequent intervals
  • Provide your eyes with complete protection from UV rays
  • Use sunglasses to block out bright lights, especially outdoors
  • Make lifestyle changes such as giving up smoking
  • Reduced alcohol consumption is also recommended
  • Diet rich in Vitamin C is suggested for cataract patients
  • Avoiding straining your eyes
  • Avoid working in dim light settings
  • Reduce exposure to glare

When should you get your cataracts removed?

“The right time to get your cataract surgically removed is when it interferes with your ability to perform daily activities. When simple tasks such as reading become difficult, it is time to consult your healthcare provider,” she said.

Mehta shared that cataract surgeries, such as phacoemulsification and extracapsular. are known to have a good success rate and are generally safe to undergo.
