Sustainability was the order of the day, and we sought the guidance of an expert, Designer Shilpi Gupta, to learn how we can transform our wardrobes with eco-conscious choices without sacrificing style or burning a hole in your pocket.

Here are her top 5 tips for incorporating sustainability into your wardrobe:

  1. 01

    Build a capsule wardrobe

Consider building a capsule wardrobe, a curated collection of versatile, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. This approach not only reduces waste but also allows for endless outfit possibilities.

  2. 02

    Use responsible materials

When adding new items to your wardrobe, opt for fabrics with a minimal environmental footprint. Materials such as cork, hemp, organic cotton, regenerated cotton, and linen are eco-conscious choices. In colder seasons, prioritise wool and alpaca for warmth while maintaining sustainability.

  3. 03

    Consider timeless appeal

Invest in high-quality garments with classic charm. Traditional patterns and hand-embroidered clothing that never go out of style should find a place in your collection, minimising the need for constant updates.

  4. 04

    Support ethical brands

Align your fashion choices with your values by patronising ethical and transparent brands. Look for certifications like Fair Trade, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), or B Corp, as they validate a brand's commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

  5. 05

    Engage in mindful consumption

Embrace mindful consumption by regularly assessing your clothing collection and applying the principles of reuse, repurpose, and recycle. Get creative with your existing garments, experimenting with different styles, alterations, or accessories to give them a fresh lease of life.

By following these tips, you can contribute to a circular fashion economy, which reduces your environmental footprint without compromising on style.
