After a four-year long hiatus, the lingerie catwalk extravaganza–Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is back. The runway is known to feature top models such as Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr, Kendall Jenner and more as ‘Angels’.
Timothy Johnson, CFO, said during the company’s 2022 earnings conference call, “We’re going to continue to lean into the marketing spend to invest in the business, both at top-of-funnel and also to support the new version of our fashion show, which is to come later this year.”
The Fashion Show was cancelled in November 2019 amid several controversies surrounding the brand, including the late Jeffrey Epstein’s close ties to the former corporate CEO Les Wexner, declining sales and no representation of different sizes.
The model Kate Upton ripped on the show during a conversation with Andy Cohen and said, “You know what, we’re sick of seeing the same body type,” adding that one has to be body inclusive now. “Every woman needs to represented. Otherwise, it’s a snooze fest.”
The 2018 show’s audience of 3.27 million viewers was also the smallest since becoming a holiday season television event in 2001, with Nielsen pointing out that the show lost more than half its audience over a two-year span.
Moreover, in February 2020, The New York Times reported that L Brands’, the parent company’s former marketing officer Edward Razek was creating a “culture of misogyny, bullying and harassment.”
What is the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show?
Launched in 1997, the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has historically seen some of the most renowned models such as Naomi Campbell, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen and others.
In 2021, Victoria’s Secret said goodbye to its ‘Angels’ and welcomed atheletes, activists and actors as the company’s new ambassadors. Revamping its image, they rolled out The VS Collective, which includes a diverse lineup of spokespersons such as Valentino Sampaio, Megan Rapinoe and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
Netizens have taken to Twitter to share their feelings about the return of the coveted fashion show. One user wrote, “I’ll reserve my outrage until we see if they actually have become inclusive or all this just merely performative.”
Singer Lizzo, who recently released her own inclusive shapewear line, Yitty, took to Twitter to address the news and wrote, “This is a win for inclusivity for inclusivity’s sake. But if brands start doing this only because they’ve received backlash then what happens when the ‘trends’ change again? Do the CEOs of these companies value true inclusivity? Or do they just value money?”
