Dakota Fanning reveals why Tom Cruise sends her a pair of shoes for birthday: ‘He kept that tradition going for 20 years’

For the last two decades, Dakota Fanning has received a pair of shoes from Tom Cruise for every birthday, ever since the actors starred together in the 2005 Steven Spielberg film War of the Worlds. In conversation with TODAY, Fanning spilt the beans on the little tradition she shares with her old co-star.

Why did Tom Cruise start this tradition?

“He sends me beautiful shoes, it’s become a bit of a tradition. I think on my 12th birthday, I loved shoes. I had just started fitting into adult-sized shoes, and so I was really excited about it. So for that birthday, he gave me shoes. And he kept that tradition going for 20 years. Like, nice shoes like Louis Vuitton and Prada,” she told the interviewer, adding, “He’s got good taste. I save them all, but I also use them daily.”

This shoe tradition is a story Fanning had previously explained on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where she revealed that Cruise had gifted her a Motorola Razr for her 11th birthday, before the tradition started, in which he gifts her shoes. On the show, she also shared that when shooting for “War of the Worlds”, she fit into small-sized adult shoes, something that was “very exciting for her”.

Fanning has been spotted wearing ballerina flats time and again, a wardrobe staple that became a signature to her personal style in the years to come.
