A popular trend in the 1950s, brought to light by fashion designers Pierre Cardin and Hubert de Givenchy, bubble hem skirts resurfaced in the 1980s, thanks to the late Princess Diana of Wales and pop singer Madonna, and again in the 2000s when style icons Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton joined the trend.
Now tapping into nostalgia, the skirts have made their cyclical return to the runway — but with a modern update that retains its ‘throwback’ quotient yet makes it a contemporary piece. Here’s a look at some celebs who have slayed bubble skirts and how:

Celebrity stylist Jhanvi Pallicha said that bubble hems are visually striking because of their balloon-like shape and exaggerated voluminous silhouette. “They create movement and dimension that uniquely catch the eye compared to standard skirts,” she added.
Neeraj Singh, Head of Design at Fashinza, explained that the bubble skirt is architectural by design, and such pieces typically wear well with other structured staples.
Singh advised styling bubble skirts with boxy blazers, sleek trousers, or a puff-sleeve top to play up the dramatic shape.
Pallicha suggested a form-fitted turtleneck, rubbed knit top, or a simple fitted blouse tucked in to streamline the look. Pairing them with cropped jackets or blazers while keeping the waistline visible would prevent the voluminous skirt from overwhelming the outfit. Denim and leather jackets would be great for a casual look, and a cropped tailored blazer would be perfect for a more formal and polished look.
She emphasised accessorising wisely to prevent the look from becoming too busy since the bubble hem is already a statement. “Opt for minimal and sleek jewellery. Go for a small structured bag to maintain the elegance of the entire look.” According to her, minimalist footwear like pointed-toe heels, strappy sandals, or Mary Janes would complement the bubble hem skirt without competing with it.
