Today is the day, you decide. The day you finally step outside of the comfy shrug that makes you look like a glorified tiffin ka dabba. Easier said than done. As is Alia Bhatt the proof. The original student of Bollywood has long stuck to her cutesy style. Perhaps since she first started out in Tinsel Town.

So, colour me surprised (pleasantly) when I saw her new cherry red Gucci look that left a huge expanse of her skin on display and is solidly outside of the star’s comfort zone. Alia wore a wine-red straight-cut mini dress straight off the runway from Gucci’s spring/summer 2024 show. She didn’t stop there, topping off the look with an edgy shoulder-length both — a welcome change from her usual long waves.

Stylist Rishi Raj believes the key to dressing outside of your comfort zone is confidence and open-mindedness. “It’s important to believe in your own personal style and embrace the opportunity to try new things,” he tells indianexpress.com in an interaction.

Designer Shilpi Gupta agreed, adding that you must develop a style that makes you feel confident and comfortable. “It’s not a one-day game to evolve your style. Take baby steps and explore instead of changing drastically.”

Whether you like modest dressing or showing some skin, or you’re a plus-size woman sceptical about experimenting, there are ways to switch up your style. We’ll tell you how.

Here are 5 tips to dress outside of your comfort zone

Mix and match

If you lean towards modest clothing but want to experiment with other styles, you can start by mixing elements of modesty with more contemporary pieces. For example, pair a traditional maxi skirt with a trendy crop top or try layering a sheer blouse over a camisole for a touch of modesty with a modern twist.

Play with proportions

Instead of focusing solely on showing skin, you can explore different proportions and silhouettes that flatter your body shape. Plus size women, for instance, can try structured blazers or kimono-style jackets to provide coverage while still embracing their curves. Experimenting with varying lengths and proportions can create a balanced and stylish look.

Accessorise strategically

Accessories can be excellent tools for both completing an outfit and adding a touch of personal style. For those who prefer a more covered look, accessories like statement necklaces, belts, or scarves can enhance their outfit while still allowing them to feel comfortable and confident.

Seek inspiration

Look to fashion icons, influencers, celebrities, or even your own personal circle for style inspiration. Take inspiration from their outfits and adapt them to your own taste and body type. Fashion blogs, magazines, and social media platforms can provide an abundance of creativity and ideas, helping you find that middle ground between comfort and exploration.

Start small

Experiment with small changes first, like incorporating unique accessories or trying out a bolder colour palette. Gradually push your boundaries and challenge yourself to step outside your fashion comfort zone.

Remember, confidence is key, so wear whatever makes you feel like the best version of yourself
