In the world of home décor, living rooms get all the love, “like the popular girls in college that get all the attention,” author and designer Twinkle Khanna says. But your bedroom? It’s often left behind, hidden behind closed doors, cluttered with laundry and old suitcases.

“Bed pe gila towel rehna toh ghar ghar ki baat hai,” Twinkle continues, adding tips on how to turn your bedroom into a calming sanctuary without breaking the bank.

“A good quality mattress is something that you will wish you had invested in earlier,” she says, stressing the importance of comfort. And if you’re setting up or upgrading, she suggests looking for a bed with storage and a plush headboard, ideal if you like to read before bed.

Not all improvements need to be big or expensive. A simple tall side table, as Twinkle recommended, gives you a neat spot to place your coffee or water jug, “I like to keep a jug of water by the bedside… and keep drinking through the night and going to the toilet also through the night,” she jokes.

Clever storage makes a world of difference. She uses long trays and baskets under the bed, “label karna mat bhooliye,” she adds, so things stay neat and easy to find. Vintage trunks are another storage trick, doubling as charming decor and available affordably at local second-hand markets.

Wall art doesn’t have to be expensive either. Twinkle suggests using smaller, meaningful pieces instead of investing in a single large one: “a smart way to decorate the walls with artwork that’s meaningful to you.” And when it comes to furniture placement, don’t push everything against the wall. “Create a cozy reading nook by placing your furniture at a little distance from the wall,” she advises, and balance it with plants, lamps, or side tables.

Speaking of plants, Twinkle is a big believer in greenery: “We are programmed to feel nurtured by plants and trees… keep a few plants handy.” She swears by spider plants, snake plants, and money plants, all easy to care for and hard to kill.

Renting? No problem. A tall mirror can be leaned against a wall, adding depth and brightness to your room without requiring drilling holes. “Just make sure that the bed is not reflecting in the mirror,” she warns the superstitious.

For a high-ceiling illusion, floor-length curtains are her go-to, even for shorter windows. Use sheer drapes to filter daylight, and heavier ones for privacy at night. Want even more privacy? “Window tinted film… will work as a mirror to anyone standing outside—just remember, in the evening it will be reversed!” she quips.

She also shares simple hacks to hide messy extension wires—paint over tape the same colour as your wall, or hide the board with a plant. Add final touches like hanging planters, bedside lighting, or tinted films to complete the space.

Ultimately, she says, your bedroom should feel like a true retreat—“your place of rest where you can escape from work emails, kitty tantrums, and the symphony of traffic horns.”

Paint your walls in light shades—off-white or eggshell white. Just avoid that too-bright detergent white that looks like your walls were bleached. It’s all about creating calm, space, and style—even on a budget.
