Durga Puja begins on the sixth day of Navratri and is not just a simple festival rather an elaborate occasion for which the preparations begin months in advance. It is observed in the month of Ashvin as per the Hindu calendar, which according to the Gregorian calendar falls during September-October. This is the major festival for Bengalis across the world, and is an occasion that marks the victory of good over evil. While this is the most popularly celebrated Durga Puja, interestingly
The puja spans over a period of nine days and each day has its own significance. The last four days of the celebration are considered the most sacred and is celebrated elaborately. The seventh day, known as Maha Saptami, marks the beginning of the Maha Pujo. During the wee hours of the morning of Saptami, goddess Durga is evoked using the nine plants, known as Navapatrika. These are pomegranate, banana, ashoke, bel, paddy, colacassia, turmeric, jayanti and arum plant. These plants are believed to represent the nine forms of the goddess and are given a pre-bath in the holy water of Ganga. Saptami is dedicated to Maa Kalaratri and people observe it by dressing up in blue for the occasion.
