Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan has said his 13-month tenure in the state was the happiest period in his public life and he would carry with him fond memories as he is set to move to Delhi as the next Vice President of India. Speaking at an informal felicitation meeting at the Raj Bhavan here on August 25 after his candidature for the vice presidential election was announced, Radhakrishnan called himself an "uncompromising nationalist". He said his mother had narrated inspiring tales of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to him. He also hailed Dr B R Ambedkar for giving India its Constitution and fighting social evils with courage. - PTI

Vice President Election Results 2025 Live Updates: NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan was declared the winner of the vice-presidential contest, having netted 452 first preference votes. “Opposition’s vice-presidential candidate Justice Sudershan Reddy secured 300 first preference votes,” Rajya Sabha Secretary-General PC Mody announced. This meant a victory margin of 152 votes for Radhakrishnan who will now become the 15th Vice-President of India. The voting began at 10 AM and the process was completed at 5 PM. PM Narendra Modi met him later and congratulated Radhakrishnan on his victory.
BJD, BRS and SAD abstain from polls: Regional parties like the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have used the election as a flashpoint in a bid to solidify their position as principal opposition parties for their respective states by abstaining from the elections — highlighting local issues — and distancing themselves from national level coalitions. BJD said its decision is part of its policy of “maintaining an equal distance” from both the BJP-led NDA and Congress-led INDIA blocs. BRS working president K T Rama Rao said his party’s move is an expression of “anguish” of Telangana’s farmers over the shortage of urea in the state. SAD said it will boycott the poll in the wake of floods in Punjab.
Who were the contenders? The National Democratic Alliance has chosen Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the Vice-Presidential election. C P Radhakrishnan, a former Lok Sabha MP and former Governor of Jharkhand, is credited for “laying the foundation of the party in the south” during his tenure as the Tamil Nadu BJP president from 2004 to 2007. The Opposition, on the other hand, has selected former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate. Justice Reddy, who retired in 2011, will be the first former top court judge to contest an election for the post. He had a five-year tenure in the Supreme Court.
The vice-presidential election is over. C P Radhakrishnan, nominee of the ruling alliance, has been elected with a comfortable margin. As per the official tallies, he got 452 votes against the Opposition nominee Justice B Sudershan Reddy’s 300. The run-up to the poll was unusually charged. From Justice Reddy’s warning on GST restructuring to his earlier verdict on Salwa Judum and its impact on the government’s efforts to end Naxalism — many things shaped the debate.

Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia congratulated CP Radhakrishnan for his victory in the vice presidential election, saying the country will move ahead and stay on the path of progress under his leadership. “I want to congratulate our Vice President from the bottom of my heart. His huge victory is a declaration of the fact that he has served the people in his life, held many positions, including as a Member of Parliament, state president, and governor. And he has a rich history of serving the people. Not only the functioning of the Rajya Sabha but the Constitution is also in his hands, and the responsibility of taking India forward on the basis of the Constitution is also on his shoulders today,” Scindia told reporters here. - PTI
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated C P Radhakrishnan on winning the vice-presidential polls.
In a post on X, Khandu said, “My sincere congratulations to Shri C P Radhakrishnan Ji on assuming the high office of Vice President of India. Your extensive experience in public service, rooted in a deep connection with people, positions you well to guide the Rajya Sabha with wisdom, fairness, and dedication.” Khandu said Radhakrishnan's leadership will strengthen the country's democratic institutions and give voice to those at the margins.
"Wishing you strength and success as you embark on this important role of safeguarding the dignity and effectiveness of our parliamentary democracy," Khandu added.
V-P elections have not normally elicited the kind of hype that this contest generated. The fight was not between the two candidates.
Their campaign, if anything, was low-key, with Opposition nominee and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy urging MPs to follow their conscience and Radhakrishnan espousing the nationalist cause. While the outcome was never in doubt, the main question was whether cross-voting could occur from the ruling alliance’s side.

Former vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar Tuesday extended greetings to his successor C P Radhakrishnan, saying that the office of the vice president will attain greater glory with his vast experience.
This was Dhankhar's first public statement since demitting office in July.
On Tuesday, NDA nominee Radhakrishnan won the vice-presidential election by bagging 452 votes, while Opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy polled 300 votes.
In a letter to Radhakrishnan, Dhankhar said: "Your elevation to this august office reflects the trust and confidence by the representatives of our nation."
He said given Radhakrishnan's vast experience in public life, under his stewardship, the office would "certainly attain greater veneration and glory".
In a surprise move, Dhankhar had quit as the vice president on July 21 citing health issues. His sudden resignation led to the fresh vice presidential polls.

Soon after NDA candidate C P Radhakrishnan won the vice presidential polls, the Congress on Tuesday said the Opposition stood united for the election with a "most respectable" performance and claimed that the BJP's arithmetical victory is both "moral and political defeat".
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge extended best wishes to Radhakrishnan on securing victory in the election, while also expressing sincere gratitude to B Sudershan Reddy for being the "united Opposition's joint candidate" and for his spirited and principled fight.
"This was more than an election; it was a battle of ideology, reaffirming that governments with authoritarian tendencies must be checked to protect our Constitution and democracy," Kharge said on X.
"We hope the new Vice President-elect will uphold the highest ethos of Parliamentary traditions, ensuring equal space and dignity for the Opposition, and not succumb to pressures of the ruling dispensation," the Congress chief said.
The vice president, the second highest constitutional office in the order of precedence, must be revitalised to reflect independence, fairness, and strength in safeguarding democratic values, Kharge said.
"We must also remember why this election was necessitated. Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned suddenly on the very day he chaired the opening of the Monsoon Session—an exit still unexplained and unceremonious," he said.
"As we move forward, transparency, accountability, and respect for Constitutional positions must guide our institutions in letter and spirit," Kharge said.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh asserted that the Opposition stood united for the
vice presidential election.
"Its performance has undeniably been most respectable. Its joint candidate Justice (retd) B Sudershan Reddy secured 40% of the vote. In 2022, the Opposition had received 26% of the vote in the vice presidential elections," Ramesh said.
"The BJP's arithmetical victory is really both a moral and political defeat. The ideological battle continues undiminished," Ramesh said.

The Opposition INDIA alliance named retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy its candidate for the September 9 Vice-Presidential election.
Justice Reddy, who retired in 2011, will be the first former Supreme Court judge to contest an election for the post of Vice-President. In 1979, former Chief Justice of India Mohammad Hidayatullah was elected the Vice-President by a consensus among different parties. He was briefly the acting President in 1984. In 1982, former SC judge Justice H R Khanna contested for the office of President and lost to Giani Zail Singh.
Justice Reddy, 79, was born on July 8, 1946, in the village of Akula Mylaram in Ranga Reddy district, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. He graduated from Osmania University in Hyderabad in 1971 and began practising law in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, serving as the government pleader, and was later elected president of the AP HC Advocates Association. In 1993, he was appointed a judge of that court and in 2005, became the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2007.
During his five-year tenure in the top court, Justice Reddy heard several constitutional cases. His most consequential judgment was the celebrated Nandini Sundar versus State of Chhattisgarh in 2011 in which the top court banned the Salwa Judum militia, directing that the practice of using tribal youth as Special Police Officers to counter the Naxal insurgency be brought to an end.

Ahead of the vice presidential poll, the Congress on Tuesday attacked YSRCP president Jagan Mohan Reddy for supporting NDA nominee C P Radhakrishnan and accused him of betrayal for not standing with democratic forces.
In a post on X, Congress leader Manickam Tagore said the people of Andhra Pradesh will not forget his "betrayal" by choosing to support an RSS candidate out of "fear" of CBI cases over the interests of Andhra Pradesh.
"History won't forget Mr @ysjagan's betrayal. By supporting an RSS-backed candidate for Vice President, he has chosen fear of CBI cases over the interests of Andhra Pradesh," he said.
"This is not about strategy. This is about surrender - surrendering to Modi - Babu's pressure, instead of standing with democratic forces," Tagore said.
The Congress leader said Jagan's "compromise" today will be remembered as the day "he placed his personal survival above people's mandate." "Andhra deserved courage. He chose cowardice," he alleged.
"When leaders bend before Delhi out of fear, they betray the people who trusted them. Jagan will be remembered not as a fighter, but as a politician who sold his spine to escape CBI courtrooms," Tagore said.

Article 66 lays down the process of the election of the Vice-President.
It says the Vice-President “shall be elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of the members of both Houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote and the voting at such election shall be by secret ballot”.
The Electoral College consists of 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha (currently, five seats are vacant), 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha (currently, one seat is vacant), adding up to 788 members (currently, 782 members). In the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote, the elector has to mark preferences against the names of the candidates.
“Preference can be marked in the international form of Indian numerals, in Roman form, or in the form in any recognised Indian languages… The elector can mark as many preferences as the number of candidates. While the marking of the first preference is compulsory for the ballot paper to be valid, other preferences are optional,” the Election Commission of India said in a press release issued on August 1.
Under the Constitution, the Vice-President “shall not be a member of either House of Parliament or of a House of the Legislature of any State”. If a member of any of these Houses is elected to the post, “he shall be deemed to have vacated his seat in that House on the date on which he enters upon his office as Vice-President”.
"Why are the Vice Presidential elections being held? Where is the former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar?...NDA has to work very hard to prove its majority in the elections, as the INDIA alliance's Vice Presidential candidate, B. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to take over from the Delhi Police the security inside the main complex of the Vice-President’s residence, place of stay, the proximate security, and mobile protection.
The Home Ministry has asked the Delhi Police to take responsibility for access control, or car passage clearance duty, and the security outside the Vice-President’s residence.
“The CRPF is requested to provide security to VP as per the provisions of Blue Book-2025 for the protection of VP after intimating the MHA,” a senior officer of MHA said in a communication to the central armed force.
In a communication to CRPF, the senior MHA officer said, “In term of the provisions of Blue Book-2025 for the protection of Vice-President, the responsibility for proximate security, including mobile protection and security inside the main complex of VP’s residence, place of stay, shall vest with Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), while the access control and area security will be ensured by the State/UT police.”
While the numbers seem to be stacked in favour of the ruling BJP-led NDA in the Vice-Presidential election scheduled for Tuesday, in which the NDA’s candidate C P Radhakrishnan is pitted against the Opposition INDIA alliance’s nominee Justice (retired) P Sudershan Reddy, the decision of the BJD and the BRS to abstain from voting may further boost Radhakrishnan’s prospects.
Both the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD and the K Chandrashekar Rao-headed BRS, which are not part of the NDA or the INDIA bloc, announced Monday that their MPs will abstain from voting in the high-profile election.
While Radhakrishnan is the Maharashtra Governor, Justice Sudershan Reddy is a former Supreme Court judge. The election to the Vice-President’s post was necessitated by the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on the opening day of Parliament’s monsoon session on July 21, when he suddenly quit, citing health concerns.
Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde has been named one of the polling agents for the NDA candidate in the upcoming Vice-Presidential election.
Shinde chaired a meeting of Shiv Sena MPs in New Delhi on Monday, where Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal briefed members about the voting process and guidelines.
The electoral college for the V-P election has 781 MPs – 239 members from Rajya Sabha and 542 members from Lok Sabha.
The numbers appear to be tilted in NDA's favour, with 425 MPs. The BJP itself accounts for 342 members in both Houses.
The Opposition camp has 324 MPs, with the Congress having 126 members.

Leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc held a meeting in the Parliament complex on Monday in a show of unity on the eve of the vice presidential election, and urged MPs to listen to their inner conscience and vote independently in this "ideological battle".
The MPs were told not to let their vote go to waste in the September 9 vice presidential poll and were informed about the procedure of casting votes, while exuding confidence about their victory and leaving nothing to chance.
Sources said the opposition MPs were urged to listen to their "inner conscience" before casting their votes and not cast an invalid vote. The last vice-presidential polls saw some votes declared invalid.
The parliamentarians also took part in a mock poll for Tuesday's election.
Opposition MPs were told to only mark preference '1' in their ballot and not mark anyone as their second preference on the ballot paper. The second preference votes are counted only in case there is a tie between the two candidates. (PTI)
As per Article 66 of the Constitution of India, the Vice-President is elected by the members of the Electoral College, consisting of the members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. Currently, there are 781 members in both Houses.
A section of legal experts on Monday vehemently criticised joint opposition's vice presidential candidate B Sudershan Reddy over his recent meeting with RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav, alleging that his "engagement" with convicted individuals speaks volumes about his intentions and allegiances.
"It is dismaying to note that B Sudarshan Reddy recently had a private meeting with Lalu Prasad Yadav who stands infamously convicted in the fodder scam case which involved the embezzlement of about Rs 940 crore of public funds from the state of Bihar," a group of 25 legal experts, including senior advocates of the Supreme Court, said reacting sharply in a joint statement. The Odisha Congress on Monday said BJD chief Naveen Patnaik should prove that his party was genuinely opposed to the BJP by voting against the NDA candidate in the vice presidential elections scheduled for Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das said, "This is the right opportunity for Patnaik to give a clear picture to the people that his BJD is the real opposition in Odisha. Abstaining from the VP polls to avoid the situation will ultimately help the BJP.” Das recalled the BJD's change of stand during the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. (PTI)
BRS Working President K T Rama Rao on Monday said his party would abstain from the Vice Presidential election on September 9 as an expression of "anguish" of Telangana's farmers over the shortage of urea in the state, alleging both the Congress and BJP have "failed" to address the issue.
The shortage is such that scuffles are taking place among farmers while waiting in queues for urea, the BRS leader said. "We are abstaining. We are not going to participate," he said, quoted by news agency PTI.
Amid a crisis, party chief K Chandrashekar Rao suspended his daughter K Kavitha last week for her remarks against senior leaders. Kavitha, who is also the president of Telangana Jagruthi, handed over her resignation as an MLC to the Speaker.
Earlier, Odisha's principal opposition party headed by former chief minister Naveen Patnaik, said its MPs will abstain from voting in the elections. The regional parties' moves highlight the rift between them and national-level coalitions.
Odisha's principal opposition party, Biju Janata Dal (BJD), on Monday announced that its MPs will abstain from voting in the vice presidential elections.
The party, headed by former chief minister Naveen Patnaik, said it took the decision as part of its policy of "maintaining an equal distance" from both the BJP-led NDA and Congress-led INDIA bloc at the national level.
"BJD president Naveen Patnaik has decided that the party's MPs will abstain from voting in the vice presidential elections. He took the decision after consulting senior party leaders, members of the political affairs committee (PAC) and lawmakers," BJD MP Sasmit Patra said. (PTI)
If the Opposition was hoping to “stump” the NDA, particularly the TDP, in Telugu-speaking states by nominating retired Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy for vice-presidential polls, it may not pay off as no regional party in either Telangana or Andhra Pradesh seems ready to support its pick.
The Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP, which Monday announced its support for the NDA’s pick, C P Radhakrishnan, said it would not be changing its mind.
“Only because the nominee is from undivided Andhra Pradesh, we will not change sides. We have made a decision and will stand by it. The vice-president is for the country and not Andhra Pradesh alone,” a senior YSRCP leader told The Indian Express on the condition of anonymity.
YSRCP Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy had told The Indian Express that the party had decided to support Radhakrishnan after Jagan received a phone call from Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh seeking support.
“Decent”, “friendly”, “unassuming”, “100 per cent RSS” – these are some of the epithets several leaders knowing Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan use to describe the ruling BJP-led NDA’s candidate for the Vice-Presidential election.
Fuelled by the NDA’s majority numbers, Radhakrishnan, known as CPR, is on course to succeed former V-P Jagdeep Dhankhar, who suddenly resigned on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, two years before his tenure’s end, after falling out with the BJP dispensation. This marked an unprecedented development that a V-P quit in the middle of his term due to differences with the government.
The BJP high command nominated CPR, 67, as he ticks three key boxes: low-key, RSS background and South connection given that he is from Tamil Nadu.
TWO DAYS ahead of the Vice-Presidential election, joint Opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy made an appeal to Members of Parliament “to vote not in favour of their party, but in favour of the country”.
“The few things that I would like to say to you. This is not from the objective of giving a speech. I would like to say some things to you within the limits of ideology and your conscience… The V-P elections are coming. I request you all to vote not in favour of your party, but in favour of the country. I have full confidence that whatever decision you take will not be in your or my favour, but in favour of the country,” Reddy said in a video message.
“I am ready to accept whatever decision you take. The country belongs to all. It is your responsibility more than mine to keep this country safe. This is because you are Members of Parliament. This vote is not just for the V-P, but the vote is for the soul of the country. Let us all strengthen our republic and create a legacy which can evoke feelings of pride for generations to come.”
In his message to MPs, Reddy said he stands before them with humility and a deep sense of responsibility as a candidate for the office of the Vice-President of the great republic.
