17-year-old girl gang-raped in UP’s Hathras, 1 arrested

“At around 3 am on March 3, she came out of the guest house and waited for a transport to take her home when the two men, aged around 22 years, said they would drop her off in Aligarh on their bike. While on the way to Aligarh from Hathras, they stopped the bike and took her to a desolate place by the roadside where they took turns to rape her,” said Hathras Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ashok Kumar Singh.

The police said that the accused fled from the scene after the crime, and she came out onto the road seeking help. A passerby came to her rescue and informed the area police station.

“We have lodged the First Information Report (FIR) and sent her for the medical examination. She told us that the accused were part of the catering team at the wedding function,” said the police officer.

Hathras had witnessed a sensational gangrape-murder three years ago. In September 2020, a 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in Hathras by four upper-caste men, and she died two weeks later in a Delhi hospital. A court in Hathras in March 2023 convicted the main accused and acquitted three others of all charges in the case.
