A farmer was allegedly burnt to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly after unidentified assailants tied him to a cot on which he was sleeping late on Saturday night.

According to police, local residents in Bareilly district’s Karanpur village saw smoke coming from the hut on Sunday morning and rushed to the spot, only to find the burnt body of Lochan alias Vakil, 45. The cot to which he was tied was also reduced to ashes.

Speaking to The Indian Express over the phone, Daya Shanker, the in-charge of Faridpur police station, said, “The FIR will be lodged today. Meanwhile, we sent the body for post-mortem which indicated that he died due to asphyxiation.”

Lochan’s son Shyampal, 22, said his father used to sleep in the hut in their field and on Saturday night he followed the same routine after having dinner at their home. Lochan’s wife Dalkumari died ten years ago following a prolonged illness and he lived with his son in a joint family.

“My father did not have enmity with anyone in the village. I have no clue as to who would have killed him in such a brutal manner,” Shyampal said.
