In another step towards tackling ‘ghost faculty’, the National Medical Commission, the apex medical education regulator, has now asked all medical colleges across the country to upload details of their faculty members on their websites by July-end and update it every month.

All faculty members on the list have to be on-boarded on the online attendance system and their details must comprise the name of the faculty member, their recent photograph, latest designation, educational qualification, and the registration number issued by the respective state medical councils, the recent notice said.

The list must be available department-wise indicating the departments of the medical superintendent, dean, and principal as well, it said.

“This faculty list must be uploaded on the website latest by 31st July, 2024… The list will be updated every month. The deadline for updating shall be the last day of every month… Any incorrect, incomplete and/or late submission of information shall attract appropriate action against the medical institutions/medical colleges concerned,” it said.

The notice states that the names on the list will have to be added to the online attendance system as well. The regulator can now conduct “online inspections” after the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) across all medical colleges was implemented. Footage from CCTV cameras installed by colleges at key points such as OPD entrance, outside wards, and operation theatres also assist the regulator in keeping a tab on patient attendance as part of its online inspections.

Amid reports from various medical colleges that silicon thumbs are being used to mark attendance online, the NMC in another notice warned that this will attract appropriate action. “This is viewed seriously by the National Medical Commission. It is advised that all faculty members must mark their attendance personally in the AEBAS connected to the NMC at their medical college,” it said.
