UPI outage disrupts digital payments across India; NPCI says ‘intermittent technical issues’

Digital transactions across India were disrupted Saturday as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) faced a widespread outage, leaving users unable to complete payments on platforms like Google Pay and Paytm. This is the third such major outage reported in a month.

In a statement posted on X, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) confirmed the issue and said it is facing “intermittent technical issues” leading to partial UPI transaction declines.

“NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue, and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused,” the post on read.

Earlier on March 26, digital payments were disrupted significantly for about three hours. Users flooded Downdetector, a platform that tracks service outages, with complaints about failed transactions and connectivity issues.

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is a payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It enables users to send and receive money instantly using their phone numbers or unique UPI IDs.
