The family members of the woman have claimed that they were not at home when the incident happened. The Tripura Police Sunday detained four people in connection with the brutal murder of a woman whose half-burnt body was found tied to a tree in the backyard of her house at Champaknagar in West Tripura district a day earlier.
The deceased woman, identified as Minati Debnath, 56, was a widow and she lived with her two sons and a daughter-in-law.
The family members of the woman have claimed that they were not at home when the incident happened. Meanwhile, the neighbours of the deceased woman told media persons that they did not hear any screaming or quarrels to arouse suspicion.
A senior police officer said, “The brother of the deceased woman, Mohan Bashi Debnath, who filed the murder complaint, has claimed that he was at Champaknagar market around 7:30 pm last evening (Saturday) when a local informed him that his sister had caught fire at her house. He rushed to her house and found that her body, which was tied to a papaya tree, was still burning.”
The brother has complained that the woman could have been killed by members of her family owing to some dispute.
“We have detained four people including the deceased woman’s son, brother-in-law, and two others. A probe is underway. Whoever is involved in the crime will be caught,” the officer added.
The police also said that the burn injuries on the body appeared to be ‘post-mortem’, which means that the victim could have been murdered first and then her body was burnt.
A case has been registered at Jirania police station under Section 103/3 (5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unidentified individuals.
