Tripura is preparing to emphasise development issues, among other topics, at the 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), which is set to begin in Agartala on December 21. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Development of North Eastern Region Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia are expected to attend, stated Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday.
Chief ministers from other Northeast states will also participate in the plenary session. “As you know, the 72nd plenary session of NEC will be held at Agartala; I came here (Pragna Bhaban) along with the chief secretary, director general of police and others. So, I think it (preparation) is up to the mark. I think we can show something that we have prepared to welcome our home minister and all CMs of the NE region”, said CM Saha during his visit to Pragna Bhaban in Agartala for inspection.
CM Saha, along with Chief Secretary J K Sinha and Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan, inspected Ujjayanta Palace, the Tripura state museum. When asked about the agenda, the chief minister said the discussion would focus on the region’s development and the utilisation of funds sanctioned by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
In light of the political situation in Bangladesh, which shares an 856-km international border with Tripura, security arrangements have been tightened for the plenary session.
DGP Ranjan said plans are being put in place for the movement of VIPs from the airport. “We will deploy sufficient forces to manage the crowd, establish barricades, and ensure surveillance,” said the DGP.
The plenary session, initially scheduled for August 31, was postponed due to a devastating flood that claimed 36 lives.
CM Saha said during his recent visit to Mumbai, he interacted with prominent business leaders. “I had an in-depth discussion with them, and they expressed their interest in sending a team here,” he said.
