Nearly 250 houses damaged in Tripura thunderstorm

The State Emergency Operation Center informed that 12 houses were fully damaged and 176 houses were partly damaged at Kailashahar, while another 49 houses were partly damaged and four houses were severely damaged at Kumarghat in Unakoti district

Nearly 250 houses were damaged after a thunderstorm struck Tripura’s Unakoti district on Saturday.

The State Emergency Operation Center informed that 12 houses were fully damaged and 176 houses were partly damaged at Kailashahar, while another 49 houses were partly damaged and four houses were severely damaged at Kumarghat in Unakoti district.

However, there were no reports of any death or injury yet.

Mithu Das, a resident of the Boulapasha area in Kailashahar, said materials worth Rs 70,000 were destroyed after a tree fell on his shop during the thunderstorm.

Similarly, clay artist Subrata Rudrapal said, “Many idols in my shop were damaged. I incurred a loss of Rs 1.5-2 lakh. The chairperson of the Municipal Council visited the spot and asked me to submit an application seeking compensation to the SDM.”

Kailashahar Municipal Council Chairperson Chapala Debroy said, “Many houses in the area were damaged due to the thunderstorm. I have visited different spots. We shall take up the compensation issue with the state administration.”

In a separate incident, two houses were damaged after a fire broke out in the West district on April 24.

The state administration has provided a total of Rs 5,000 as interim financial relief to the two persons whose houses got damaged in the fire.

Earlier in April, two people were electrocuted to death, and over 700 houses were damaged after nor’westers hit different parts of the state.
