Among the Northeast states, Tripura has secured the second position in the growth in gross state domestic product (GSDP), Chief Minister Manik Saha said on the occasion of the 53rd Statehood Day on Tuesday.

“Peace is the prime thing for development. No development is possible if there is no peace. There has been a rise in investment and footfall of tourists owing to the prevalence of peace in the state. In case of the rise in GSDP, Tripura is in the second position among the Northeast states,” he said during an event organised at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala.

He further stated that Tripura is moving forward in development with the overall assistance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, adding that the devastating flood last year was controlled with the assistance of the Centre and the local people.

“Solution to any problem is possible due to the double-engine government. PM Narendra Modi says that overall development of the country is not possible if the Northeast is not developed. With this aim, PM Modi has adopted different steps for the development of the region through the Act East policy,” he said, adding that there had been remarkable development when it came to national highway, Railways and internet connectivity as part of Modi’s HIRA model.

“Double-engine government” is a term used to indicate that BJP-led governments are in power both in the state and at the Centre.

Further, Saha stated that the state government has taken initiatives such as the Tripura Industrial Investment Policy, Tripura StartUp Policy, Unnati scheme, Tripura Asset Management Policy, Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana, state policy for women empowerment, Tripura Satellite Development Township Scheme and Tea Auction Centres for the socioeconomic development of the state.

“Today marks the 53rd Statehood Day of Tripura, a significant milestone in the state’s journey. To commemorate this occasion, I attended the state-level celebration of Statehood Day at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, Agartala, and extended greetings to the people of the state. Highlighted the Government’s initiatives to build Viksit Tripura, embodying the vision of ‘Ek Tripura, Shreshtha Tripura’,” he later wrote on X.

Chief Secretary J K Sinha said Tripura would have a remarkable role in fulfilling the target of Viksit Bharat by 2047. “In the current period, skill development is relevant. Special initiatives need to be taken to enhance the skills of the students and youths in different sectors,” he said.

Director-General of Police Amitabha Ranjan emphasised the police’s role in ensuring peace and development in the state.

Five civilian awards, 10 Statehood Day awards and the chief ministers’ civil service awards were given away.

Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya became full-fledged states on this day in 1972, following the North East Areas (Reorganisation) Act 1971. Before being merged with the Indian Union in 1949, Tripura used to be a princely state.
