Police seize over 1 lakh methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 5.5 crore in a major drug bust in West Tripura. (File/Representational image)In a major crackdown on drugs in Tripura, 1.06 lakh methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 5.5 crore were seized and three suspected drug peddlers were arrested in West Tripura district, the police said on Friday.
The police identified the accused as Mohammad Babul Miah, 45, Sipan Hussain, 26, and Sanjay Miah, 42, adding that they were arrested from Babul Miah’s house in the Mahiskhala Chandinamura area of West Tripura district on Thursday night.
The raids, led by Deba Prasad Roy, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Sadar, and officials of the West Agartala police station, were conducted as part of an operation to make Tripura a ‘drug free’ state, the police said.
“The raid was conducted on Thursday night. A case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The accused will be taken to court,” Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police, West Tripura district, said.
The police said they also seized five smartphones and two motorbikes during the raids.
Last month, in a joint operation by Assam Rifles, Customs, and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), yaba tablets worth Rs 24 crore were seized from two places in Tripura on two consecutive days.
Assam Rifles has recovered contraband items worth Rs 95.56 crore in 21 different operations since January.
Tripura shares an 856 km-long border with Bangladesh, several patches of which are still unfenced due to local disputes.
