TMC wins 34,901 of total 63,229 gram panchayat seats in Bengal; BJP distant second

The TMC won 2,634 of the total 3,317 gram panchayats in the state. While the BJP won 220 gram panchayats, the Left Front won 41 and the Congress five gram panchayats.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has won 34,901 of the total 63,229 gram panchayat seats across West Bengal and the BJP came a distant second with 9,719 seats, as per the State Election Commission’s website, updated at 4.30 pm.

While the Left Front won 3,083 gram panchayat seats, the Congress won 2,542 seats and others won 2,896 seats, according to the website.

The TMC won 2,634 of the total 3,317 gram panchayats in the state. While the BJP won 220 gram panchayats, the Left Front won 41 and the Congress five gram panchayats. The ISF failed to win a single gram panchayat. Others, including independent candidates, are leading in 214 gram panchayats, as per the website. As many as 203 gram panchayats have thrown up a hung condition. The counting in the rest of the seats is going on.

In terms of panchayat samiti seats, the TMC has won 6,430 out of total 9,740. The BJP won 982 seats while the Left Front won 180 seats. The Congress won 266 panchayat samiti seats. Others, including independent candidates, won 279 seats. Counting is going on for the rest of the seats.

The TMC won 264 of the total 341 panchayat samitis. The BJP won nine panchayat samitis while the Left Front won three. Others have won nine panchayat samitis while there is a hung condition in four panchayat samitis.

Of total 928 zilla parishad seats, the ruling party has won 674 and the BJP 21. The Left Front has won two zilla parishad seats while the Congress has won six. One seat went to an independent candidate. Results for the rest of the seats are yet to arrive as the counting is going on. The TMC has won all the 20 zilla parishads in the state.

The state has 3,317 gram panchayats with 63,229 seats, 341 panchayat samitis with 9,730 seats and 20 zilla parishads with 928 seats.

The elections were held on July 8 in over 61,000 booths, with a voter turnout of 80.71 per cent. They were marred by widespread violence that led to the deaths of at least 21 people. Incidents of booth capturing, ballot box looting and destruction of ballot papers were also reported from several districts.
