As a citizen-friendly initiative, the CEIR portal has proven invaluable to citizens who have lost their mobile devices. (File Photo)Telangana has emerged as the top-performing state in the country in recovery of stolen or lost mobile phones, and has found 78,114 such devices up to May 19, 2025, according to the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) dashboard.
Despite launching the CEIR portal 227 days after the pilot states, Telangana now leads the country in recoveries. The CEIR portal, developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is operational across all 780 police stations in Telangana under the supervision of the Central Investigation Department (CID), which serves as the nodal agency.
According to CEIR, the Hyderabad commissionerate recorded a recovery of 11,879 devices, the Cyberabad commissionerate 10,385, and the Rachakonda commissionerate 8,681 devices.
“The state’s remarkable achievement has set a national benchmark in mobile device recovery,” Shikha Goel, Director General, CID, said in a statement.
According to the statement, Telangana’s CEIR initiative is highly effective, firstly because of dedicated efforts by field-level officers. “Every unit has been diligently working to ensure prompt action on reported cases through the CEIR portal. This includes consistently registering cases, daily monitoring of tractability reports, contacting individuals in possession of lost or stolen mobile phones, retrieving the devices, and returning them to their rightful owners. These concerted efforts have significantly contributed to the high recovery rates and the continued success of the CEIR initiative in Telangana,” it said.
Enhanced Citizen Access is a key factor which the Telangana Police have achieved, in coordination with DoT, by integrating the CEIR portal with the TG Police Citizen Portal. “Citizens can report lost or stolen devices through the TG Police Citizen Portal at http://www.tspolice.gov.in or directly at http://www.ceir.gov.in.”
Thirdly, as a citizen-friendly initiative, the CEIR portal has proven invaluable to citizens who have lost their mobile devices.
DoT has developed the CEIR portal to combat mobile theft and counterfeit devices. The portal was initially launched in pilot states — Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi and Northeastern states — on September 5, 2022. In Telangana, the CEIR portal was launched on April 19, 2023.
