(PTI07_23_2025_000171A) Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, RJD’s Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, on Wednesday responded to the idea of “considering boycott” of the upcoming Assembly polls in the state over alleged “discrepancies” in the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls – a thought his INDIA bloc allies did not respond positively to.
In response to a question outside the Assembly – the session is currently underway – on whether the Opposition could boycott polls, he said, “We can discuss this. We will discuss this with allies and people. If such is the situation when one decides who gets (wins) how many seats, there is no need to hold elections.”
Tejashwi has been leading the Opposition protests over alleged SIR “discrepancies”. The roll revision was debated in the Assembly on Wednesday, amid din, and the session was subsequently adjourned.
When contacted, Congress legislature party leader Shakil Ahmad Khan told The Indian Express, “I have not heard about what Tejashwi ji has said.” Asked if such issues could be discussed in the coordination committee meet of the INDIA bloc, Khan said, “I have no idea at this stage.”
Another Congress leader, however, said, “The Opposition must not be provoked into even discussing poll boycott. After all, elections alone are the way to find an answer from the people to such questions.”
CPI (ML-Liberation) state secretary Kunal was more direct in his response. “In the first place, we do not know where this talk of poll boycott consideration comes from. The Supreme Court has been examining the matter, and we will await the July 28 hearing. We have concerns regarding the SIR process, but our booth-level agents will also provide us final feedback from the ground in three to four days. We will build pressure on the ECI to ensure that names of no genuine electors are dropped from the electoral roll.”
Tejashwi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also had a tiff over the SIR in Assembly on Wednesday, with the latter challenging him to get the “matter settled” among people in the polls.
