‘Teachers must monitor and inform officials’: Chhattisgarh minister on order to remove dogs from schools

The Chhattisgarh Education Department has appointed nodal officers to monitor and report stray dogs and cattle found near school premises. New guidelines have been issued to ensure the safety of children from stray animals roaming around schools. Principals and school heads have been instructed to regularly share information about the situation on their campuses so that timely measures can be taken to prevent any harm.

School Education Minister Gajendra Yadav stated that principals and school authorities must stay vigilant about stray dog activity around schools. He also noted that the Supreme Court has previously issued guidelines concerning the protection and management of stray dogs.

Addressing the media, Chhattisgarh Minister Gajendra Yadav said, “Yesterday, our department issued an order in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directive. We were instructed to constantly monitor any stray animals, whether dogs or cattle, within or entering the school premises…”

He noted that an incident where a stray dog spoiled food that was being prepared for midday meals which cost the government approximately Rs 22 lakh. He said, “To prevent this, we monitor the number of dogs on campus and inform the Municipal Corporation and Gram Panchayat, urging them to find and implement a solution for their removal.”

He further requested to not be misled by this order since no teacher has been assigned to monitor dogs in particular. However, Yadav said that it should be a teacher’s job to monitor who is entering and leaving the school.

The guidelines also emphasise that children who suffer dog bites must receive prompt medical treatment. All district education officers have been directed to ensure strict implementation of these instructions to maintain a safe environment for students.
