Rough sea ahead of the landfall of Cyclone 'Montha', in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu (PTI)Chennai Weather Today: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rainfall alert in many cities in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and Tiruvallur, on Tuesday. The weather department has issued an ‘orange’ alert in coastal areas across Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Montha is set to transform into a severe cyclonic storm today.
“Cyclone Montha is expected to move north-north westerly and cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada district in Andhra Pradesh as a severe cyclonic storm on the evening or the night of October 28,” Director of Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) B Amudha said.
The cyclone is expected to cross the coast of Tamil Nadu today, though authorities have said that no major damage is expected and all precautions are in place.
The meteorological department has forecast 50 to 70mm of rain in the North Chennai and Tiruvallur areas on October 28.
In view of moderate to heavy rainfall in Chennai today, the authorities have decided to shut down all schools and educational institutes. It is forecasted that rains will subside by tomorrow.
Cyclone Montha to hit Andhra tonight
IMD said in its forecast that Cyclonic Storm Montha over the west-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of Tuesday.
In a statement, the weather department said, “The Cyclonic Storm Montha over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 6 hours, intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centered at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 28th October 2025 about 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 340 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 550 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).”
Parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been experiencing heavy rainfall since yesterday, and coastal areas in southern states have been evacuated to ensure safety.
