Tamil Nadu weather: Heavy rain forecast for 12 districts, Chennai to get light showers

The IMD has forecast fairly widespread rainfall across the state this week, with heavy spells likely over some districts till October 10.

After steady showers on Tuesday (Oct 7), Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu are set for another wet spell as as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate rain with thunder and lightning. An orange alert has been issued for 12 districts, including Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Nilgiris and Tirupattur, where heavy rain is expected at isolated places.

The weather office attributed the wet spell to an atmospheric low-pressure area off the Tamil Nadu coast in the southwest Bay of Bengal, coupled with another system over southern India. The IMD has forecast fairly widespread rainfall across the state this week, with heavy spells likely over some districts till Oct 10.

In central and coastal belt, districts such as Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Thanjavur and Thiruvarur are likely to experience light to moderate showers accompanied by thunder and lightning through the morning.

Slight dip in day temperatures expected

The southwest monsoon withdrawal is still in progress, and meteorologists have forecast a gradual dip in day temperatures by 2°C–3°C in parts of Tamil Nadu from Oct 8.

In Chennai, the sky is likely to remain generally cloudy with occasional light rain in some areas. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34°C, while the minimum may settle at 26°C.
