Speeding SUV hits police during late-night check in Patna, woman constable killed

The two occupants of the Scorpio were arrested, though the driver managed to escape, the police said.

A police constable died and three others were injured after being hit by a speeding SUV on Atal Path in Patna during routine vehicle-checking late Wednesday night.

According to the police, the accident took place between 10.30 pm and 12.30 am when personnel from the Sri Krishna Puri police station were conducting a vehicle-checking drive, barricading the service lane on Atal Path. While inspecting one car, an SUV that was approaching from the Digha side at high speed collided with it, pushing the vehicle into another that was also being checked, Patna SSP Awakash Kumar said.

The impact flung a woman constable onto a divider, while two sub-inspectors sustained critical injuries, sources said. Another person was also injured in the collision, police said.

The SSP said the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment where the “policewoman was later declared dead”.

“The police were conducting checks when a fast-moving car rammed into the vehicle under inspection, hitting the officers. The two occupants of the Scorpio were arrested, though the driver managed to escape. We are conducting raids to apprehend him,” the Patna SSP said.

Police are interrogating the individuals for further leads and also investigating whether the vehicle occupants, including the driver, were under the influence of alcohol.
