The CBI has arrested two more men for allegedly sending youths to the Russia-Ukraine war zone in the guise of lucrative jobs, taking the total number of arrests in this case to four.
“Arun and Yesudas Junior alias Priyan of Kerala were arrested today, while Nijil Jobi Bensam of Kanyakumari and Anthony Michael Elangovan of Mumbai were arrested on April 24,” a CBI spokesperson said.
According to the CBI, Nijil worked in Russia as a translator and was one of the key members of the network operating in Russia facilitating recruitment of Indian nationals in the Russian Army. “Michael was facilitating visa processing in Chennai and booking air tickets. Arun and Priyan were the main recruiters for the Russian Army,” the CBI spokesperson said.
The CBI found that a single agency based in Delhi sent as many as 180 people to Russia, mostly on student visas. Sources said the role of embassy employees is also under scanner.
