An Assam-based activist has urged state and Central authorities to take remedial measures to address the impact of road fencing, widening work and non-functional car-speed sensor cameras on the safety of animals using wildlife corridors in and around Kaziranga National Park.
The activist, Rohit Choudhury, wrote to the Assam Forest Department, the Environment Ministry and the National Tiger Conservation Authority flagging these issues earlier last week.
The activist pointed out that in the Burapahar Forest range, the PWD was widening NH-37 and had erected concrete and metal posts along the roadside with cable fencing. During the flood season, rhinos, elephants and even tigers are forced to migrate towards the Karbi Anglong Hills via NH-37 and the fencing obstructs this movement, Choudhury wrote.
The Indian Express reached out to the Kaziranga Park administration but didn’t receive a response.
