Police averted a major tragedy by detecting a powerful IED planted near a railway track in Anantnag district that go to polls on April 30.
The Improvised Explosive Device (IED),weighing about 25 kg,was detected by a police party on Tuesday night at Khelan village,45 kms from Srinagar,a police spokesman said.
The liquid IED in a cylindrical shell was declared “dangerous” by the bomb disposal squad,which later defused it.
“The IED detection was on a tip off,” the spokesman said adding timely detection of the IED averted a major tragedy ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency is slated to go to polls in the third phase on April 30.
Since the announcement of elections,the militants had made about half a dozen unsuccessful attempts to set off IEDs in the valley.
Two powerful IEDs were neutralised on Srinagar-Airport road last month,while similar devices were recovered from Kupwara,Bandipora and Baramulla districts.
