The Jammu and Kashmir government plans to establish 10 hatcheries in the state as part of efforts to boost the economy and generate employment opportunities for unemployed youth in the state.
We are planning to set up 10 hatcheries in different districts. Day-old chicks would be processed and provided to the poultry units, Minister for Sheep and Animal Husbandry Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi said while chairing a review meeting of his department in Budgam district of Central Kashmir.
Asserting that cattle and sheep-rearing have ample potential to boost the economy and generate employment opportunities,the minister said. Nearly 15 lakh sheep and goats are being imported for mutton consumption in the state annually,necessitating an outgo of Rs 1,500 crore for the state economy,he noted.
The government has initiated several measures and introduced six schemes under these twin sectors to involve more people in the establishment of income generating units,he said.
Disclosing that 200 para-vets are being engaged in the state to supplement the manpower in the animal husbandry department,Mehdi said Budgam district has vast pastures and grass fields which can facilitate such ventures and asked officers to involve the youth,particularly those that are unemployed,in these projects.
