Further heating up the battle in Kerala between INDIA bloc members Congress and CPI(M), Left-backed Independent legislator P V Anvar launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi, saying his “DNA should be examined”.
Addressing a CPI(M) election convention at Edathanattukara in Malappuram on Monday, Anvar said, “Rahul has no right to use the Gandhi name. He has stooped to the level of a fourth-class citizen. Was he born into the Nehru family? I have doubts – his DNA should be examined.”
He made the comments as he criticised Rahul over the latter’s jibes against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. On Tuesday, Vijayan defended Anvar’s remarks.
“When Rahul speaks, he should be careful and should understand that he would get a fitting reply. Rahul is not someone who has protection (from criticism). During friendly conversations, Congress leaders say that Rahul has changed. I thought, as a person who had walked across the country, Rahul would have acquired knowledge. (But) what he recently said in Kerala was unbecoming of a political leader… He should not take an approach that helps BJP,’’ the CM said.
He was referring to Rahul’s comments during a rally last week in Kerala, when the Congress leader had said, “Two chief ministers are in jail. How come this is not happening to the Chief Minister of Kerala? I am attacking the BJP 24×7, and the Chief Minister of Kerala is attacking me 24×7. This is a bit puzzling.”
The Congress has alleged that Vijayan was not criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi because of investigations by central agencies into an alleged illegal payment scam at Vijayan’s daughter Veena’s IT firm, and another alleged scam at a co-operative bank in Thrissur.
The next day, Vijayan had reminded Rahul that it was Rahul’s “grandmother who had jailed us for one-and-a-half years (during the Emergency)”.
