The edict issued by Takht Hazur Sahib to Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, for distorting couplets from the Gurbani, dominated public discourse at the rally of Congress candidate, Joginder Singh Panjgarin that addressed by AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi here on Monday.
While waiting anxiously for Rahul Gandhi, who arrived at 12:40 pm, the people gathered were heard discussing the tankhaya declared on Majithia. It was the hot topic for the leaders addressing the rally as well. Although Rahul did not mention Majithia in any way, other leaders including the Congress nominee Panjgrain took pot shots at the minister.
Those present at the rally preferred spending time discussing the edict while waiting for Rahul. “I am surprised that the edict came from Takhat Hazur Sahib and not from Akal Takht, which is the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs. Let us see when he goes to apologise over there,” said Pritam Singh, a resident of Daulla village. The menfolk harped on the fact that it has been long since somebody was excommunicated. “We are just wondering why Majithia distorted the couplet. There was no need,” said Amarjeet Singh, a resident of a village in Moga.
Interestingly, while the electorate in Punjab has been discussing issues like sand mafia, drug mafia, pensions, delay in salaries , the focus was only the edict on Monday.
Of goof-ups and being left out
* While it was Yoga guru Ramdev who had stated that Rahul goes to Dalit houses for a picnic, Rahul attributed it to Modi.
* Rahul forgot to mention Faridkot candidate Joginder Singh Panjgrain’s name during his 45-minute address. He was reminded by Panjgrain after he finished his address and sat down. Rahul then got up, grabbed the mike and asked people to vote for Panjgrain.
* Senior leader and former MP from here Jagmeet Singh Brar, was specially made to be present at the dais due to his influence in the area. Brar had once defeated Sukhbir Badal by a landslide at Faridkot.
