Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India and Mauritius are natural partners in the maritime domain who can deal with traditional and non-traditional challenges in the Indian Ocean region.

After inaugurating an airstrip and a jetty in the Agalega Islands along with his Mauritius counterpart Pravind Jugnauth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the two countries are working actively towards ensuring security, prosperity and stability in the Indian Ocean region.
Mauritius PM Jugnauth said that the airstrip and jetty will enhance the island’s capacity and capabilities in marine surveillance and security, while also meeting development objectives. Jugnauth also said that there has never been any agenda to transform Agalega into a military base and condemned the India-bashing campaign.
PM Modi said that India and Mauritius are natural partners in the maritime domain to deal with traditional and non-traditional challenges in the Indian Ocean region. He also announced that Mauritius will be the first country to join India’s Jan Aushadhi scheme, an initiative rolled out to provide quality medicines at affordable prices.

At a virtual ceremony, Modi and Jugnauth inaugurated several community development projects at the Agalega Islands in Mauritius that were implemented with India’s financial assistance.
Modi described Mauritius as an important partner under India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, noting that the two countries achieved “new heights” in mutual cooperation in the last few years.
“Various traditional and non-traditional challenges are emerging in the Indian Ocean region. These challenges impact our economic systems. India and Mauritius are natural partners in the maritime domain to deal with these challenges,” PM Modi said. “We are working actively towards ensuring security, prosperity and stability in the Indian Ocean region,” he added.
“Indeed, we are making history today on the Islands of Agalega, with the inauguration of a new airstrip, new jetty, and several other development projects. This event marks another great moment for the remarkable and exemplary partnership between Mauritius and India,” Jugnauth said.
Jugnauth said that the setting up of the facilities of the new airstrip and St James Jetty in Agalega is the fulfilment of yet another Mauritian dream which people of many generations have had in their hearts. “This could not have been possible without the assistance of India which has entirely financed these infrastructural projects,” he said.
