Eknath Shinde at Idea Exchange: ‘In Lok Sabha, did we say they stole the votes? They got more seats, didn’t they?’

A grassroots Maratha leader, he has been a strategic figure in the ongoing Maratha reservation movement. As chief minister from June 2022 to November 2024, he oversaw major infrastructure projects, including the Samruddhi Mahamarg and Atal Setu

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on the Maratha reservation issue, the upcoming local body elections in the state and reduction in GST slabs. This session was moderated by Shubhangi Khapre and Vallabh Ozarkar.

Shubhangi Khapre: As a Maratha leader, when you joined the BJP after the Shiv Sena split, it was believed that your presence would help resolve any problem with the Maratha reservation issue. Recently, however, we saw activist Manoj Jarange Patil coming to Mumbai and holding the city hostage for five days. What is your view on this?

Mumbaikars faced some trouble but now Jarange Patil’s agitation has ended. We — chief minister Devendraji (Fadnavis), Ajit dada (Pawar) and I — spoke to many people, including experts, legal advisors and the Advocate General. We also had sub-committees. We can’t fulfill all their demands and things need to be done within the framework of the law. So we issued a GR (Government Resolution) on the Hyderabad Gazette, through which they will get Kunbi certificates. They are saying that through the Gazette, all the people (Marathas) of Marathwada will get OBC certificates but that’s not how it works. There was also a certain percentage — both Kapu and Kunbi castes who were registered in the Gazette. So, whoever is Kunbi (a farmer, called Kapu there) — in the village or has Kunbi ancestors or relatives — will get the Kunbi certificate as per the GR. A three-member committee, at the very grassroot level in the village (Talathi and Gram Panchayat level), will investigate and give it.
