Parliament Monsoon Session: Both Houses adjourned sine die

The Monsoon session of the Parliament was marred by protests by Opposition MPs over Bihar SIR row and INDIA bloc's 'vote chori' allegations.

Parliament Monsoon Session Updates: The Parliament reconvened today for the last day of the Monsoon session, and a special discussion was scheduled to be held in the Houses to honour the achievements of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla for his space travel. The discussion will also focus on the “critical role of space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047.” Further, INDIA bloc VP candidate B Sudershan Reddy is scheduled to file his nomination for the Vice Presidential elections today. The Vice President will be elected by the Electoral Collage comprising of members of both the Houses, including those who were nominated. Polling will be conducting on September 9.

New Bills in final days of Monsoon session: The Lok Sabha passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, by a voice vote on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025. The Bill seeks to remove a Central or State Minister who is facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and has been detained for at least 30 days and has been referred to a Joint Committee.

The Bill will amend Article 75 of the Constitution: It will amend Article 75 of the Constitution, which primarily deals with the appointment and responsibilities of the Council of Ministers, including the Prime Minister. “A Minister, who for any period of 30 consecutive days during holding the office as such, is arrested and detained in custody, on allegation of committing an offence under any law for the time being in force, which is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or more, shall be removed from his office by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister to be tendered by the 31st day after being taken in such custody,” the Bill states.

It was approved by the Upper House after rejecting amendments moved by Opposition members. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

As the verbal duel reached a high, Congress leader Venugopal tore the Bill and threw it in the Well. This was followed by other Congress MPs and opposition party members, including Samajwadi Party’s Dharmender Yadav, doing the same. After this, all opposition MPs came to the Well of the House and started shouting slogans.

'Attempt to be heard'

TMC's Kalyan Banerjee, trying to be heard, neared Shah’s mic while the Union Home Minister was speaking on the Bill. Banerjee started shouting slogans.

Seeing this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju rushed to Shah’s seat and angrily asked Banerjee to step back.

Taking the cue, the entire Treasury Beaches moved towards the TMC MPs. They came so close that Shah himself had to intervene, asking people to calm down.
