Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Monday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for skipping the all-party meet that was convened to discuss the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people last week.

Kharge termed it a “misfortune” for the country that while all leaders attended all-party meet on Pahalgam the prime minister was busy giving speech in Bihar.

Speaking in Jaipur, Kharge however said that his party leaders has decided to extend their support to the NDA-led Central government in its action against the Pahalgam attack: “Country is supreme, then come parties, religion. Everyone should be united for the country.”

He slammed the Centre over alleged misuse of investigative agencies on Congress leaders and said: “Whenever Congress grows, these people try to suppress it. We are not the ones to be suppressed.”

“We talk of unity, they talk of breaking it. In this country, Constitution is supreme. Our democracy runs under Constitution.” he added.

He further alleged that Modi is responsible for the inflation and unemployment in the country. “Such people weaken the country. The 56-inch chest has shrinked,” Kharge said.

Meanwhile, the Union government is satisfied with the outcome of the all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, as every party leader who attended assured their support to the government in whatever steps it takes, said sources. Many in the government were surprised by the “kind of reaction” the attack had triggered.

After the meeting, Rajnath Singh had said Indians, cutting across religious lines, stood united despite the “hurt” the terror attack, which killed 25 tourists and a local pony-wallah, had caused.

“Jo ghatna hui, isme saara desh aahat mein hai (the entire country is hurt by what happened). But we stood united, irrespective of the religion we belong to,” Singh told The Indian Express.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi had said that a united opposition would support any action taken by the government.
