A first-year student of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar was found dead in his hostel room on Sunday night. This is the third such case this year.
The student, identified as Rahul Yadav (18), a resident of Raigarh in Chhattisgarh, was a student of computer science engineering at the private institute, police said.
Preliminary enquiry suggests his alleged relationship with a girl could be the reason.
Verification of his social media accounts, digital communication and information from hostel inmates, mother and relatives of the deceased indicate that he was in a relationship with the girl from his state.
The student’s mother, Nirmala Yadav, also alleged harassment by the girl’s family. “The girl’s father used to call me and my son and threaten us. My son was under mental pressure. I had repeatedly called the hostel authorities to keep a watch on him but nobody cared,” she said.
Police said a case has been registered on the basis of her complaint against the girl’s father, mother and brother.
“The hostel room, which was locked from the inside, was opened in the presence of police officers. The body was shifted to KIMS Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead,” said the Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar.
KIIT authorities are yet to issue a statement on the student’s death.
In July, UGC had asked the university to explain why “disciplinary or legal action” should not be taken against it following the death of two students from Nepal on February 16 and May 1. The fact-finding panel had said KIIT administration’s actions “amounted to criminal liability”.
