Prior to the Supreme Court hearing of the matter, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Monday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the case of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya whose execution is scheduled for Wednesday (July 16) in Yemen. In a letter to the PM, CM Vijayan urged him to "take up the matter" and intervene with the authorities concerned to save the woman's life. Sharing the letter on X, Vijayan said: "Wrote to Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji urging urgent intervention to secure the release of Nimisha Priya, who remains imprisoned in Yemen. Why is Nimisha Priya facing execution? Indian-origin nurse Nimisha Priya has been convicted of the murder of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mehdi. According to government sources, Nimisha was convicted for the crime of murder in Yemen in June 2018, and a local court sentenced her to death. A native of Kerala, Nimisha had worked as a nurse in Yemen for several years until she was accused of murder in 2017.
