NIA registers another FIR against 2 men held for radicalising youth

Two months after arresting two men for their alleged links with the banned terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered another FIR against them for their their alleged affiliation with Al-Qaeda and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), radicalising Muslim youths in India through “end-to-end encrypted social media platforms” and sending them to Afghanistan for terrorist training.

It all started after the NIA arrested Mohammed Arif, a software engineer from Bengaluru, and Hamraz Worshid Shaikh from Thane, Maharashtra, in February this year in a case relating to conspiracy by terrorist organisations based in India and abroad to radicalise the youth and provoke them to indulge in acts of violence and terrorism.

“A case was initially registered at Tilaknagar police station in Bengaluru on July 24 last year and re-registered by the NIA on August 8,” an NIA official said.

The NIA registered a fresh FIR on April 3 under IPC Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and sections 17, 18, 18-B, 38, 39 and 40 of UAPA.

“During examination of Arif and Hamraz, it has been revealed that they are affiliated with proscribed terrorist organisations Al-Qaeda and TTP for the cause of establishing Sharia across the world. As part of the conspiracy, they were indulging in radicalising and recruiting gullible Muslim youths in India through end-to-end encrypted social media platforms and for further sending them to Afghanistan for terrorist training… and to further the activities of Al-Qaeda and TTP, they were also raising funds for the nefarious activities,” the FIR states.
