Around 3.74 crore rural houses have been sanctioned and constructed under PMAY-G and Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) over the last 10 years compared to 3.25 crore rural houses under IAY in 29 years till 2014, Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh said Wednesday.

Not only did the NDA government led by PM Narendra Modi construct more houses under the rural housing scheme, Singh said, the minimum area was also increased to 25 sq m under PMAY-G from 20 sq m under IAY. With a target of constructing 2.95 crore houses by March 2024, over 2.94 crore houses have already been sanctioned while construction of 2.56 crore houses has been completed as on January 31, 2023. This is separate from 74 lakh houses built under IAY in 2014-16.
