The Tripura Police Monday arrested three men, including one from Bihar, who had two pistols and four magazines, among other contraband, from the Amtali Bypass area on the outskirts of Agartala city.

The police said the three men were identified as Tinku Debbarma, 35, and Sumenda Debbarma, 40, residents of Barkathal in West Tripura district, and Sibash Kuma, 29, a resident of Dumeria Khurd area of Bihar.

“A team of police personnel headed by the officer in charge of Arundhatinagar police station were conducting patrolling around the Brajeshwar bridge area on the Amtali Bypass when they came across three men behaving suspiciously. Upon checking, the weapons and the mobile phones were recovered from their possession,” Namit Pathak, Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, told reporters.

The details of who these weapons were intended for, the extent of the arms smuggling racket in connection with this case, and the reason for which they were brought to the state are yet to be ascertained, said the police.

“For now, a case is being lodged against these three under the Indian Arms Act. Preliminary investigation shows that the weapons were brought from Bihar to Tripura. We can give more details only after further interrogation of the arrested men,” Pathak said.

Dhruba Nath, Additional Superintendent of Police, Sushanta Deb from the Arundhatinagar police station, and others were part of the team which made the recovery.

This is not the first time the Tripura Police have arrested people with illegal weapons.

On November 15, a man was arrested with one factory-made pistol, one magazine, four live rounds of ammunition, and some contraband items near the Srimantapur border in the Sepahijala district.

On June 15, the Tripura Police arrested a man, Lalit Kumar Reang, 54. They seized a pistol and a few rounds of ammunition from his possession in a village under the Khedacherra police station in North Tripura district.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested along with a pistol, a few live cartridges, and 7,800 yaba tablets worth Rs. 20 lakh in the Bhagyapur area under Dharmanagar sub-division of North Tripura district on May 30.

Nearly three weeks before that, factory-made eight pistols and 16 empty magazines were recovered from the Tripura Sundari Express train at the Agartala railway station during a joint raid of the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) during their routine security check.
